Upon reaching Mandi, we switch to the backroads, taking the lesser-traveled route towards Karsog. This beautiful, ancient village is known for its old-world charm and peaceful surroundings. We’ll stop here for a well-deserved lunch break, soaking in the serenity of the place.

After refuelling ourselves, we continue on to Rampur, a historic town nestled nearby Sutlej River. As we approach Rampur before sunset, the golden light reflecting adds to the magical atmosphere of the region. Day 3  Rampur - Kinnaur - Nako

Leaving Rampur, we ride into Kinnaur, one of the many dramatic transitions of the journey. As we gain altitude, dense forests gradually give way to exposed rock faces and high-altitude terrain that defines the upper Himalayas

We halt at Tapri, a small roadside settlement, for lunch and a short break before continuing along the Kinnaur–Spiti route.

Post lunch, we ride towards the Khab Bridge, the confluence of the Sutlej and Spiti Rivers, and the meeting point of the Greater Himalayas and the Zanskar Range. From here, weather permitting, the mighty Reo Purgyil (6,816 m)—the highest peak in Himachal Pradesh—can be seen towering above the valley.

From Khab, the road climbs towards Nako. This ascent introduces riders to higher-altitude conditions, where patches of snow and ice may begin to appear for the first time. With guidance from our expedition team, riders adapt to these changing surfaces while maintaining a controlled and confident pace.

By evening, we arrive in Nako, a quiet Himalayan village perched above deep valleys, where we settle in for the night surrounded by snow-dusted mountains.

The next chapter of our motorcycle journey takes us from the historic town of Rampur to the rugged landscapes of Kinnaur. As we ascend to higher altitudes, the environment transitions from forests and trees to the arid, stark beauty that characterises the upper Himalayas.

Our first stop is Tapri, where we break for lunch a small bazaar on the road to Nako.  After lunch, we continue towards Khab Bridge, where two mighty rivers—Sutlej and Spiti—meet, as do two great ranges, the Zanskar and the Greater Himalayas. The sight of Reo Purgyil, the highest peak in Himachal, is also visible from here.

From here, the road beckons us further upward as we ascend towards Nako, a small village perched on top of a mountain. The uphill to Nako is the first time where you might encounter snow and ice. Do not worry remember the conversation we will have in our brief and we are there alongside you to help you. Arriving in Nako, we settle in for the night, surrounded by the glowing beauty of the snow-dusted peaks.

Day 4  Nako - Tabo - Kaza

Day 4 marks our entry into Spiti Valley’s Snow wilderness. Departing from Nako, we descend towards Sumdo, the gateway to Spiti. From here on out the roads become narrow, surfaces grow unpredictable, and the terrain begins to reflect the raw isolation of the Trans-Himalayas.

We continue to Tabo Monastery, one of the oldest functioning Buddhist monasteries in the world (founded in 996 AD). This ancient mud-brick complex, preserved through centuries of harsh winters, houses priceless murals, scriptures, and meditation chambers—earning it the title “Ajanta of the Himalayas.”
We pause here to explore the monastery and enjoy light refreshments in the quiet village.

From Tabo, we ride towards Kaza. Though the distance is relatively short, winter transforms this stretch into a technical high-altitude ride, with icy patches, frozen trails, and snow-lined roads demanding patience and controlled riding.

Arriving in Kaza, we are greeted by a surreal sight—the vast Spiti Valley stretched wide and entirely cloaked in white, from towering peaks to the valley floor. This remote high-altitude town becomes our base for the next few days.

Day 4 ushers a sense of reverence as we prepare for the challenging terrain that lies ahead. Departing from Nako, we descend towards Sumdo, the gateway to the beautiful and rugged Spiti Valley which will be under blanket of white powder. The roads become narrower as the landscape grows wilder, offering a glimpse of the unrelenting forces that have shaped this remote region.

Our journey takes us to Tabo, an ancient village of Spiti. Here, we pause to explore Tabo Monastery, a revered site that has stood for over a thousand years. Encased within its mud-brick walls is a wealth of history, spirituality, and artistic treasures, making Tabo a timeless sanctuary. Known as the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’ Tabo monastery is a must visit in your travels to Spiti.

From Tabo, we set out towards Kaza, a journey that, while only 50 kilometres in distance, could be filled with icy roads and snow-covered trails. Patience and precision are key as we navigate through this frozen landscape.

Upon arrival in Kaza, we see a landscape unlike you have ever seen before the wide valley of spiti all cloaked in white from mountain tops to the valley below all covered with the same powder snow. Kaza, with its snow-capped peaks and breathtaking vistas, will be our base for the next few days, offering both comfort and warmth. Here, we’ll find the perfect sanctuary from where we will continue exploring this extraordinary region.

Day 5  Kibber - Chicham - Key

After the demanding journey into Spiti, this day is intentionally designed as a fatigue-management and acclimatisation day. We explore the high-altitude region by car, allowing the body to adjust while still experiencing some of Spiti’s most iconic locations.

We begin by driving through the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the best places in the Himalayas for winter wildlife sightings. In this stark, snow-covered terrain, herds of Himalayan ibex and blue sheep are commonly seen, and with luck, there is even a chance of spotting the elusive snow leopard.

Our next stop is Chicham Bridge, which is among the highest suspension bridges in Asia.

We then continue to Key Monastery, the largest monastery in Spiti, perched high above the valley. Here we spend time exploring the centuries-old structure, learning about monastic life, and drinking monks secret herbal tea.

After visiting the monastery and giving our offerings we return back to Kaza for the night.

Our ride begins from Kaza and goes through Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, where we remain hopeful for a rare sighting of the elusive snow leopard. If fortune doesn’t favor us, the presence of ibex and blue sheep will still make the journey worthwhile.

We then continue to Chicham Bridge, Asia’s highest suspension bridge, built over a dramatic gorge. Here, we pause to see the views from the dizzying heights. After that we return to Key Monastery, the ancient school for Tibetan Buddhism where the setting sun illuminates the snowy peaks.

After visiting the monastery and giving our offerings we return back to Kaza for the night.

Day 6  Langza - Hikkim - Komic

This day marks one of the defining highlights of the Snow Spiti expedition, as we ride deeper into the high-altitude wilderness above Kaza.

We begin our ascent towards Langza, famously known as the Fossil Village of Spiti. Once part of an ancient seabed, this surreal landscape still holds marine fossils millions of years old. In winter, Langza transforms into a vast white amphitheatre of snow, where the horizon blurs and it feels as if sky and earth merge into one silent expanse.

Important Note: Access to Hikkim is not guaranteed, as winter conditions can make the route unsafe. Snow accumulation, ice, and sudden weather changes often force us to reassess this stretch. If conditions allow, we may attempt it—but the day’s success does not depend on reaching Hikkim.

Our main objective is to continue onward to Komic, one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. The approach is slow and technical, with snow-covered tracks demanding careful navigation. Winter riding here is extremely challenging, and safety takes priority over speed.

After completing this high-altitude winter push, we return to Kaza for the night

This day marks a key highlight of our winter expedition. Departing from Kaza, we ascend towards Langza, known as the fossil village, where remnants of prehistoric life tell stories of an ancient world. In winter, Lanza is covered in pristine white powder, offering a contrary look to the summer times. A place where you can feel that the sky earth seems to meet.

As we ride through this snowy terrain, we make our way to Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office. It’s a remarkable symbol of human resilience and the drive to maintain connections, even in the most isolated locations. Sending a postcard from this altitude is an experience that cements your presence in one of the world’s most remote regions.

From Hikkim, we push onwards to Komic, the world’s highest motorable village. Here, the ancient monastery greets us, and the view from this vantage point stretches across the vast, stark beauty of Spiti. Reaching this spot in winter is no small feat that too on motorcycle—standing at the roof of the world is an achievement that few can claim.

After a day full of adventure we return to Kaza for the night.
