Landing straight at 3,500 to 3,524 meters (11,480 to 11,562 feet) you might feel the breathlessness so its is advised to head to the property relax, hydrate, and let your body adjust to the high altitude. Our Snow Spiti adventure begins in the picturesque mountain town of Manali. Coming from your respective destinations you check in to your hotel, you’ll have time to relax and rejuvenate to the altitude. In the evening, we’ll gather for a crucial briefing session. Here, we’ll cover the route details, safety protocols, and most importantly, the technical aspects of off-road riding. You’ll receive instruction on proper techniques for handling your adventure (ADV) motorcycle, including how to navigate challenging terrain and take corners on unpaved roads. This session prepares you for the exciting journey ahead and gives you a chance to meet your fellow riders. By day’s end, you’ll be ready to embark on your Winter Spiti expedition.

Today we gear up and kickstart the engines for an easy acclimatization ride along the scenic Srinagar-Leh highway. We ride to Alchi Gompa, one of the oldest monastery complexes in Ladakh, famous for its unique Kashmiri-influenced frescoes. After exploring the monastery, we head back into town and explore the market for a relaxed lunch. In the evening, we catch the sunset from the majestic Shanti Stupa, offering a panoramic view of the entire Leh valley as it lights up.

Breaking free from the canyon, the horizon opens up to reveal the brilliant, sapphire blues of Pangong Tso. We park along the shoreline at over 13,900 feet to watch the water shift colors throughout the late afternoon. As the sun dips behind the towering Chang Chenmo range, we settle into our high-altitude camp for the night.

Prepare for a demanding day of endurance riding across the vast, remote Changthang plateau. We navigate desolate stretches past the historic Chushul Airfield before stopping to pay our respects at the Rezang La War Memorial, honoring the 1962 bravery of the Indian Army. A hot meal at an isolated Army Canteen provides crucial fuel for the challenging miles ahead.
Back in the saddle, we tackle the rugged, washboard dirt tracks of Saga La pass, rigorously testing our suspension and off-road stamina. After clearing the Nyoma checkpost, the terrain shifts into a smooth 40 km tarmac cruise straight into Hanle. We settle into this high-altitude haven, globally renowned for its pristine, light-pollution-free night skies and dark sky observatory.

Leaving our basecamp at dawn, we embark on the ultimate riding milestone. The route cuts through a desolate, high-altitude desert, demanding intense focus as we navigate the ascents of Photi La and Nurbu La. Crossing the iconic Chisumle Bridge, we engage low gears and commit to the steep, ribbon-like tarmac climbing directly into the thin atmosphere.
Arriving at 19,024 feet, we officially conquer Umling La—the highest motorable road on Earth, situated higher than Everest Base Camp. After documenting this monumental achievement and closely monitoring our vitals in the biting, oxygen-depleted air, we execute a controlled descent. We retreat back to the safety of Hanle to celebrate a legendary day in the saddle.

Pushing deeper into the vast expanse of the Changthang plateau, we tackle challenging, unpaved border tracks that demand sustained focus and precise throttle control. Our route takes a strategic detour to the secluded Chumur Gompa, a solitary monastery perched on the edge of the frontier. This remote stretch truly tests both rider and machine in an unforgiving high-altitude environment.
Leaving the monastery behind, we navigate a series of rugged dirt trails and sandy patches leading toward the spectacular alpine waters of Tso Moriri. We arrive at the high-altitude settlement of Korzok, parking our bikes right on the shores of the deep blue lake. Tonight’s lakeside camp offers a moment to rest and recover in one of the most pristine, high-altitude environments on the circuit.

Leaving the pristine shores of Tso Moriri, we ease into our final major riding day with a gentle climb over Namashang La. The sweeping curves past the vivid blue waters of Tso Kiagar offer a brilliant, low-stress morning ride. We smoothly transition our descent into the rugged terrain of the Indus Valley, leaning into the winding tarmac that carves through the expansive, barren landscape.
Navigating deeper into the valley, we take a strategic break at Chumathang to witness the intense, boiling natural hot springs erupting beside the roaring Indus River. Firing up the engines for the final stretch, we hit the smooth, fast highway hugging the riverbanks. We maintain a brisk cruising pace all the way back into Leh, concluding the high-altitude expedition just in time for a well-deserved celebration dinner.

I did Winter Spiti Expedition with Wolfpack Adventures, and it was a fantastic experience. I first got to know about them through a friend who had already done the Winter Spiti ride with them. Initially, my plan was to do the expedition in a 4x4 with my wife, but her plans got cancelled at the last moment. I reached out to the team to see if it was possible to switch to a motorcycle instead, and despite the short notice they somehow managed to arrange one for me. I ended up riding a Hero XPulse 200 with the rally kit, and the bikes were prepped really well with fresh knobby tyres, which made riding in those winter conditions a lot of fun. The routes they planned were very scenic and really showcased the beauty of Himachal Pradesh. We did miss one section due to road closure, but that’s understandable given the weather and terrain. The hotels booked during the expedition were really good and comfortable. Another highlight of the trip was the people I met along the way — I made some great friends during this ride. Overall, it was an amazing experience riding through Spiti in winter. Huge thanks to the Wolfpack team for making it such a memorable trip.

Had an amazing expedition with WolfPack Adventure, led by Seemant and Rohit. The entire trip was extremely well planned from the breathtaking routes to the fantastic hotels at every stop. What really stood out was how professionally they handled unexpected detours, which are a natural part of any real adventure. Everything was managed smoothly. I had a bike breakdown in the middle of nowhere and within minutes the backup vehicle was there, the bike loaded and off to the next stop where they managed to source parts and got them transported overnight only so I could ride and complete my trip. This is a technical ADV expedition, not a standard highway tour. While we provide briefings, you should be comfortable with off-road terrain, loose gravel, and water crossings. But you should still have prior experience with motorcycles to fully enjoy the Spiti circuit.
We decode the “chaos” for you. On Day 1, we conduct a Traffic Dynamics briefing covering mountain etiquette and “horn-language.” Our lead rider and sweep ensure the group moves as a cohesive pack as much as it can.
Prepare for a digital detox. You’ll have signal from Manali till Kaza (BSNL/Airtel/Jio), but remote areas like Mudh and Chandratal are completely offline. We carry radio communication for emergency coordination during these “blackout” stretches.
June and September month is the “Golden Window.” While much of India faces the monsoon, Spiti is a rain shadow desert, offering dry, technical riding under clear skies. This 60-day period is the only time when Kinnaur route and the high-altitude Kunzum Pass (4,551m) is clear and allowing access to Chandratal and the full circuit.
Riding at 4,500m+ is a cardiovascular marathon, not a sprint. You don’t need to be an athlete, but a healthy heart and lungs are essential for managing the “thin air” of the Trans-Himalayas. We recommend a 4-week pre-tour routine of cardio (cycling/running) and core strength to combat saddle fatigue and keep your reflexes sharp during technical off-road.
A professional medical consultation is mandatory if you have a history of respiratory or blood-related conditions. The Spiti circuit involves sleeping at 4,250m (Chandratal) and crossing 4,551m (Kunzum Pass), where oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level. Anemia directly reduces your blood’s capacity to carry oxygen, while Asthma can be aggravated by the thin, cold, and dusty mountain air. We require a physician’s clearance for these conditions to ensure your safety in these remote, “zero-medical” zones where emergency evacuation can take several hours.

You will experience the exact same route, high-altitude camps, and “Wolfpack” culture from the comfort of a rugged SUV. It’s the perfect way to witness the Spiti & Chandratal magic without the physical intensity of ADV riding, while still being an integral part of the pack.
No. There are no ATMs after Kaza, Kaza also has only one ATM which has long que most times & (UPI/Cards) sometimes might lag at Kaza due to satellite lag. So we recommend you to carry at least 15,000 INR in cash From Rampur itself or before for personal expenses, souvenirs, or traditional Tibetan crafts. Consider this part of the “off-grid” charm of the Wolfpack experience.
