The next chapter of our motorcycle journey takes us from the historic town of Rampur to the rugged landscapes of Kinnaur. As we ascend to higher altitudes, the environment transitions from forests and trees to the arid, stark beauty that characterises the upper Himalayas.

Our first stop is Tapri, where we break for lunch a small bazaar on the road to Nako.  After lunch, we continue towards Khab Bridge, where two mighty rivers—Sutlej and Spiti—meet, as do two great ranges, the Zanskar and the Greater Himalayas. The sight of Reo Purgyil, the highest peak in Himachal, is also visible from here.

From here, the road beckons us further upward as we ascend towards Nako, a small village perched on top of a mountain. The uphill to Nako is the first time where you might encounter snow and ice. Do not worry remember the conversation we will have in our brief and we are there alongside you to help you. Day 4 ushers a sense of reverence as we prepare for the challenging terrain that lies ahead. Departing from Nako, we descend towards Sumdo, the gateway to the beautiful and rugged Spiti Valley which will be under blanket of white powder. The roads become narrower as the landscape grows wilder, offering a glimpse of the unrelenting forces that have shaped this remote region.

Our journey takes us to Tabo, an ancient village of Spiti. Here, we pause to explore Tabo Monastery, a revered site that has stood for over a thousand years. Encased within its mud-brick walls is a wealth of history, spirituality, and artistic treasures, making Tabo a timeless sanctuary. Known as the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’ Tabo monastery is a must visit in your travels to Spiti.

From Tabo, we set out towards Kaza, a journey that, while only 50 kilometres in distance, could be filled with icy roads and snow-covered trails. Patience and precision are key as we navigate through this frozen landscape.

Upon arrival in Kaza, we see a landscape unlike you have ever seen before the wide valley of spiti all cloaked in white from mountain tops to the valley below all covered with the same powder snow. Kaza, with its snow-capped peaks and breathtaking vistas, will be our base for the next few days, offering both comfort and warmth. Here, we’ll find the perfect sanctuary from where we will continue exploring this extraordinary region.

We then continue to Chicham Bridge, Asia’s highest suspension bridge, built over a dramatic gorge. Here, we pause to see the views from the dizzying heights. After that we return to Key Monastery, the ancient school for Tibetan Buddhism where the setting sun illuminates the snowy peaks.

Day 6  The High Altitude Snow Circuit

On our motorcycles again, we prepare for the high altitude circuit the highlight of our journey. Ascend to Langza, the “Fossil Village,” where ancient marine life lies frozen in a vast white amphitheater. Experience a surreal landscape where sky and earth merge in a silent expanse.

Note: Access to Hikkim is not guaranteed, as winter conditions can make the route unsafe. Snow accumulation, ice, and sudden weather changes often force us to reassess this stretch. If clear, we’ll attempt the world’s highest post office; otherwise, rider safety is paramount.

Our goal is Komic, the highest inhabited village. This technical winter push on snow-covered tracks requires precision, marking a defining milestone of our high-altitude expedition returning to our base at Kaza.

This day marks a key highlight of our winter expedition. Departing from Kaza, we ascend towards Langza, known as the fossil village, where remnants of prehistoric life tell stories of an ancient world. In winter, Lanza is covered in pristine white powder, offering a contrary look to the summer times. A place where you can feel that the sky earth seems to meet.

As we ride through this snowy terrain, we make our way to Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office. It’s a remarkable symbol of human resilience and the drive to maintain connections, even in the most isolated locations. Sending a postcard from this altitude is an experience that cements your presence in one of the world’s most remote regions.

From Hikkim, we push onwards to Komic, the world’s highest motorable village. Here, the ancient monastery greets us, and the view from this vantage point stretches across the vast, stark beauty of Spiti. Reaching this spot in winter is no small feat that too on motorcycle—standing at the roof of the world is an achievement that few can claim.

After a day full of adventure we return to Kaza for the night.

FAQs

Is the Snow Spiti expedition suitable for beginner riders?
Strictly no. Unlike the summer circuit, Snow Spiti is an extreme endurance test. You will be navigating black ice, deep slush, and hard-packed snow in temperatures that can drop to -25°C. We require riders to have significant experience with motorcycle control or have completed a previous ADV tour with us. If you are a novice but have the mental grit, we recommend joining this specific expedition in one of our lead 4×4 support vehicles instead.
What is the "Wolfpack" approach to riding on snow and ice?
We don’t just “hope for the best.” Our technical approach involves: Low-Gear Torque Management: Teaching you how to use engine braking to prevent sliding on descents Tire Technicality: We use specific tire pressures and, where necessary, manual snow chains or studded setups for the bikes. Vision & Surface Reading: Training you to identify the difference between “grip-friendly” fresh snow and “zero-traction” black ice before you hit it.
Can I join the Snow Spiti expedition in a car?
Yes, but only in a high-clearance 4×4. A standard 2WD SUV or sedan is a liability in the winter valley. If you don’t have a 4×4, you can book a seat in the Wolfpack Crew SUV, which allows you to experience the landscape with the safety of a heated cabin and an expert mountain driver.
What is the reality of "Luxury" in Spiti during winter? (Water & Cash)
There is no “luxury” in -20°C; there is only survival and hospitality. Water: Pipes freeze solid in December. We use dry-pit toilets (traditional Himalayan style) and provide warm water in buckets for washing. Cash: ATMs in Kaza are notoriously unreliable in winter due to link failures. You must carry all the INR cash you need from Shimla or Rampur.
What happens if we get snowed in? The Himalayas dictate the schedule, not us.
Contingency: Heavy snowfall can shut the Kinnaur road for 24–48 hours or more. So please approach this expedition with a mindset of expecting the unexpected. The Protocol: We stay in constant contact with the BRO and local authorities. If a road closes, we pivot to local “village immersions” until the dozers clear the path. We recommend booking your international return flight at least 3 days after our scheduled return to Manali.
How do we keep the vehicles from freezing overnight?
For Diesel Backup Vehicles: Diesel fuel “gels” (turns to wax) when temperatures plummet. To prevent this, we keep our diesel support vehicles running throughout the night. By maintaining engine warmth and constant fuel circulation, we eliminate the risk of a frozen ignition and ensure our life-support systems (oxygen, medical gear, and spares) are always mobile. For Petrol Vehicles: Since petrol does not freeze in these conditions, the challenge shifts to the Battery. Extreme cold saps a battery’s chemical power instantly. We focus on keeping batteries in peak condition—often storing them in heated indoor areas overnight—to ensure the engine fires on the very first try, minimizing wear on the starter motor.
Is this expedition suitable for beginner riders?

This is a technical ADV expedition, not a standard highway tour. While we provide briefings, you should be comfortable with off-road terrain, loose gravel, and water crossings. But you should still have prior experience with motorcycles to fully enjoy the Spiti circuit.

What is the "Wolfpack" approach to Indian traffic?

We decode the “chaos” for you. On Day 1, we conduct a Traffic Dynamics briefing covering mountain etiquette and “horn-language.” Our lead rider and sweep ensure the group moves as a cohesive pack as much as it can.

Will there be mobile network or Wi-Fi available?

Prepare for a digital detox. You’ll have signal from Manali till Kaza (BSNL/Airtel/Jio), but remote areas like Mudh and Chandratal are completely offline. We carry radio communication for emergency coordination during these “blackout” stretches.

When is the right time to ride the Spiti Circuit?

June and September month is the “Golden Window.” While much of India faces the monsoon, Spiti is a rain shadow desert, offering dry, technical riding under clear skies. This 60-day period is the only time when Kinnaur route and the high-altitude Kunzum Pass (4,551m) is clear and allowing access to Chandratal and the full circuit.

What fitness level is required?

Riding at 4,500m+ is a cardiovascular marathon, not a sprint. You don’t need to be an athlete, but a healthy heart and lungs are essential for managing the “thin air” of the Trans-Himalayas. We recommend a 4-week pre-tour routine of cardio (cycling/running) and core strength to combat saddle fatigue and keep your reflexes sharp during technical off-road.

Can I ride with Asthma, Anemia, or other conditions?

A professional medical consultation is mandatory if you have a history of respiratory or blood-related conditions. The Spiti circuit involves sleeping at 4,250m (Chandratal) and crossing 4,551m (Kunzum Pass), where oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level. Anemia directly reduces your blood’s capacity to carry oxygen, while Asthma can be aggravated by the thin, cold, and dusty mountain air. We require a physician’s clearance for these conditions to ensure your safety in these remote, “zero-medical” zones where emergency evacuation can take several hours.

Can I join the expedition in a car?

Absolutely. We offer limited seats in our 4×4 Backup Vehicle or bringing your own 4×4 vehicle for non-riders, partners, or photographers. You will experience the exact same route, high-altitude camps, and “Wolfpack” culture from the comfort of a rugged SUV. It’s the perfect way to witness the Spiti & Chandratal magic without the physical intensity of ADV riding, while still being an integral part of the pack.

Is there any cash availability in Kaza and beyond at Chandratal Lake?

No. There are no ATMs after Kaza, Kaza also has only one ATM which has long que most times & (UPI/Cards) sometimes might lag at Kaza due to satellite lag. So we recommend you to carry at least 15,000 INR in cash From Rampur itself or before for personal expenses, souvenirs, or traditional Tibetan crafts. Consider this part of the “off-grid” charm of the Wolfpack experience.
